Jonathan Brisby was the husband of Mrs. Brisby and father of Martin, Teresa, Timothy and Cynthia Brisby. He is considered a hero among the rats of NIMH, Nicodemus, and The Great Owl.
Secret of NIMH[]
Before the events of the film, Jonathan is slaughtered and devoured by the cat Dragon in an attempt to drug him. His wife, Mrs. Brisby is never informed of this until she meets Nicodemus who tells her all about NIMH and the rats' escape. He is seen through Nicodemus' magic sphere helping Mr. Ages through an air vent for a very short time. Presumably at NIMH. After this, he is only mentioned and never seen again.
Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to The Rescue[]
Although never seen in person, he is mentioned in the sequel by Mrs. Brisby and Justin. According to the plot, Nicodemus foretold that a son of Jonathan (Timmy) would become saviour to the rats of NIMH, much to everyone but Martin's delight. When Timmy arrives to Thorn Valley, he learns that his father was seen as a great hero to the rats, and they believe Timmy will follow in his father's footsteps. Additionally, a statue with his name engraved is seen multiple times, engraved 'Jonathan Brisby' to honor the fallen hero. The engraving is later changed to: "Jonathan Brisby and son" with an attachment showing Timothy next to him.
Trivia[]
- Nicodemus mentions the escape from NIMH was abour four years prior to the movie, meaning Jonathan died somewhere between that time frame-its presumed his death was less than a year prior to the film, as Mrs. Brisby seems at a loss for moving day, wishing Jonathan were there to help her.
- Its also very likely he and Mrs. Brisby were already married when he was captured by NIMH, as the escape was four years ago, but Martin and Teresa seem to be much older than four. However, he looks young in the flashback
- Mrs. Brisby mentions how she was never informed how Jonathan died, only learning from the journal of Nicodemus that he was killed (presumably eaten by Dragon, or killed by the humans) in an attempt to drug the cat so the rats can carry out their plans. Its unknown how she was informed of the death, as she has apparently never met any of the rats of NIMH, who would be the only ones to know.
